Anime
The subculture that I have selected for my first blog has to do with the culture of anime and the things surrounding it in Japan. I have selected this subculture because it is something that has surrounded my life since I was a small child. My older brother had introduced me to the anime known as Dragonball Z when I was in the first grade. Back then I didn't know this type of show was called an anime since I just thought it was a normal cartoon. Since then, I have expanded my knowledge and have watch a plethora of other anime, so I am pretty familiar with this topic. The reason I am so interested with this subculture is because of the story telling that is available through animation. For example, my favorite show called One Piece, has been going on since 1997. The show itself has nearly 1100 episodes and the manga, which is the source material, has 106 volumes. Anyways, the story is about a pirate named Luffy whose goal is to find the One Piece and become the pirate king. The story so far spans only a few years of Luffy's life in which he meets people who join his crew, and together they sail the seas adventuring. The One Piece story looks kind of like a children's show at a glance but there are themes and topics that happen such as corrupt governments, racism, slavery, and many other terrible things but the author uses these topics in a way that make them understandable to the viewer.
As for values of this subculture, it really just depends on what kind of fan of anime that you are. For example, in the Dragonball fan base there are people that use the show as a means of motivation to never give up and always try to better yourself. But on the other side of the fanbase there are people that choose to be toxic and put down other communities. Another value that is prevalent in the subculture of anime is the collection of merchandise that a lot of people choose to do. For example, I have a few posters and figures from different shows that I watch but I choose to not make it my main goal. Meanwhile for some people it becomes an unhealthy addiction to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars just buying merchandise that they are interested in. This leads me to the topic of consumerism in this subculture. Consumerism can be a terrible thing in this culture because there is so much merchandise available to buy that it might just make you want to get more. Most people notice this and choose to put a limit on how much they spend on everything so that they don't get caught up in it.
